Stage 3 - How Your Portfolio Will Be Presented
Files and folders -
When showing others your work it is important to be mindful of the format you are presenting your portfolio. Think about it, before computers and the internet, showing your art would either be done in person or occasionally by post or snail mail.
Nowadays, we are spoiled for choose when it comes to showing off our skill.
Here is a list of the possible formats we now have available in 2025:
Website based - Either through your own personal website or structured websites such as Art station.
File based - This format allows you to store all your images into a digital folder on you desktop.
Cloud based - If you are someone who likes ease of access from multiple devices, this is the method for you! Simply upload your work onto google drive or iCloud and share the link to anyone you wish to see your masterpieces! just make sure they only have access to view,
Physical - Having a physical portfolio can be helpful for traditional artists, especially if you arn't tech savvy!
Social media - Social media is also a great way to show off your work.

But you may be asking yourself, what style is best? To determine this ive created a simple pros and cons list for each forma
Pros and cons to website based portfolios -
pros -
Professionalism and creditability
Always accessible
Full control and branding
SEO and discovery
All in one place
cons -
Requires maintenance, security checks and updates
Technical learning curve when building the website
Passive discovery only. people may just find your website by chance.

Best For: Your primary, non-negotiable portfolio. It's your digital business card and the destination you drive all traffic to.
Pros and cons to file-based portfolios -

Total control and privacy of your projects
High resolution original work
Fast and easy to organise

Not instantly sharable
risk of loosing files
lack of overall flow

Best For: Your source files and working master copy. It's the "kitchen" where you prepare the "meal" that will be served on your website or in a PDF.

Perfect for submitting your work to potential employers. this is great for employers
Great for version control

Having limited space can be a pain

Best For: Targeted, formal applications where a specific file is requested. Always have a beautifully designed, updated PDF ready to go.

Can be memorable in the digital world, the idea of a physical portfolio can be a sight for sore eyes
Demonstrates crafting and physical based work
forces deliberate one on one sessions with the viewer

Materials can be costly
it can only be shared in one place at a time
It can be hard to update and scale overtime
Risk if being damaged or lost

Best For: In-person interviews, studio visits, fine art applications, and final-round meetings where you can personally present and narrate the work. It's a supplement to, not a replacement for, your digital presence.

It can be much easier to be discovered through tools such as key words and hashtags.
This method is dynamic and live.

your work can be buried by others work
can come across as less professional

Best For: Marketing, networking, showing process, and driving traffic to your main website. It is a vital tool, but not your portfolio's home.
The best option is to have different formats that complement each other.
